FALKLAND ISLANDS GUN CLUB

2004 WINTER SHOTGUN SEASON

As the Winter shotgun season draws to a close the final DTL shoot took place on Sunday.  With John Clarke leading the final table and others nipping very closely at his heels it was all to be played for.  Round One saw Henry McLeod come out as a clear leader with a total score of 35 points.  His nearest rival John Clarke accrued 26 points.  The rest of the shooters were quite even with all bar Ricardo Leyton shooting in the low 20’s

Round two saw Henry continue with his good form and take overall 1st place with a total score of 58 off 34 hits.  John Clarke managed to claw his way back and scored a respectable 54 with Jonathan Butler taking third with 45 points.  Ricardo Leyton changed his ammunition and was able to score a reasonable 19 points in total.

INTERNET NEWS:

Chilean President, Ricardo Legos, could be one of the cruise ship visitors to call into the Falklands this season, along with approximately 80 other tourists.  He’s been invited onboard a vessel due to call into the Falklands on its inaugural Antarctic cruise.  The Antarctic Dream has been converted from a former Chilean Naval Icebreaker at a cost of over $6Million USD. A new company, Antarctic Shipping, which operates from Punta Arenas, did the work.

SHIP BAR NOT TO RE-OPEN:

The Ship Bar is to be converted into a staff room, rather than re-opening with the Upland Goose Hotel on Wednesday.  The Goose is being run by new managers, SODEXHO, the company’s contract manager, Diane Robinson (DR) told me this:

DR:  We are going to be a customer-based establishment with an emphasis on Customer care.  For the welfare of our staff and the comfort of our clients, they should not be eating, drinking, smoking and so on with our clients.  We need to have a place where the staff can go and eat and have some relaxation without feeling they are still at work.  I think our clients need to maintain a special environment that they are not actually sitting alongside the waiter.  They don’t need to worry about what they say and all those sorts of things.  Unfortunately, there is no place in the facility at all where we could put it and the Ship was the only option open to us as a staff room.

SG:  In terms of the Ship Bar itself, I take it, it was not making money enough to make it worthwhile keeping it on.

DR:  To be honest, I am not privy to that information.  That’s something you are going to have to take up with the FIC.  Basically, it was a request that I made to the FIC to look after the welfare of our staff and to create a customer service environment.

STREET NAMES:

The suggestions are in for the new street names at the former BFFI site and the Sheltered Housing off Villiers St.  The Late Velma Malcolm inspired 42 possible names, including Velma’s Villas, Velma’s Close, Velma’s Row, Road, Rise, and Malcolm’s Road.  The same person also put forward names inspired by the Falklands’ environment, including Kelp Close, Albatross Rise, Seashell Square, Teaberry Turn and Diddle Dee Drive.  Most of the other names to be considered by the Stanley Lands Committee this week are based on historic Falklands names and figures.  Morrison, Berntsen, Luxton, Jaffray were all put forward as local names that should be marked on the map.  Another suggestion was Norland, in honour of M/V Norland, which was requisitioned as part of the 1982 task force and remained in the Islands for a year after the liberation before heading back to work in the North Sea.  There was also a suggestion for a street name honouring Vic Spencer, the pilot who set up the Falkland Islands Government Air Service.  Andreason was put forward in memory of Chiis Andreason, who spotted the German Ships in 1914 and was presented with a five pound note and gold watch by Admiral Sterdee.

COURT NEWS:

The Courts will be quiet this week.  JPs will meet in Chambers this afternoon to discuss an application for a prohibition order.  And, the Licensing Court will sit on Wednesday morning to hear three licensing applications.  Tim Miller will apply for an off-licence for the Family Shop at MPA and Edwina Hoy will apply for two extensions until 0030 at the Narrows Bar for events on this and next Friday.

WEEKEND HARBOUR, FISHING AND SHIPPING NEWS:

The Robin M. Lee and the Sil were transhipping in Berkley Sound on Saturday.  The CFL Vallient unloaded Toothfish and took on stores, while the Tamar docked at FIPASS on Saturday.  On Sunday, the Puenta Laberio was transhipping in Berkley Sound.  She moved to FIPASS this morning.  The Argos Galicia came into Port William this morning for a health inspection and was then due to move to Berkley Sound to tranship.  The Costa do Cabo came into FIPASS for licensing.

POLICE NEWS:

It’s been a busy weekend for the Royal Falkland Islands Police.  On Friday at 1114 there was a minor collision in the Bank car-park, involving a BK Cab and another driver.  There was some damage caused and the matter is being dealt with via insurance.  At 0430 on Saturday morning there was a report of a person trying to drive a vehicle without the owner’s consent.  Police were called to the scene and they now have someone helping with enquiries.  On Saturday night there was a collision in the FIDF car-park.  Minor damage was caused and the matter is being dealt with through insurance.  The incident occurred at 0025.  At 0854 on Sunday morning it was reported that four brand-new tyres had been stolen from the Great Britain Hotel near the Fitzroy Turn-off.  The Police are investigating the theft.

IMMUNISATION NEWS:

There’s good news for youngsters at the KEMH today.  From next month, five childhood immunisations are going to be combined in one and there will be fewer jabs overall.  Dr. Roger Diggle told Liz Elliot on this morning’s Lifestyle Programme that the new injections were being introduced because they give less risk of a mild reaction.  The new vaccines are compatible with the old ones.  If your children have already had their baby jabs, they can take their pre-school boosters and other injections with the new style jabs.
