Scholar Ryan Moyce

Studying towards a Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design, St Helenian Student Ryan Moyce has been with the Norwich School of Art and Design for the last two years.

While studying Graphic Design, Ryan has covered a number of areas including Graphic Design and Photography, Typographic Skills, Advertising Campaigns, Computer Applications in Art and Design, Applying Design and Creativity, Ideas Generation, Design Craft Skills, and more. He has been doing well in all areas.

The UK Scholarships Placements Coordinator said that Ryan has continued his studies with determination and should achieve a pleasing outcome. He described Ryan as a dedicated student who deserves to do well.

An HND in Graphic Design will support Ryan in any graphics related job in his chosen field of visual art and design. He could become a qualified art teacher, or his qualification could even allow him to venture into design work using computer programmes. This means that he could also work in book and magazine publishing houses. In fact, the School of Art offers a degree in Graphic Design, and students from this course have found work in major design studios and newspapers.

Ryan’s course is a two-year one, and he is due to return to the Island at the end of this academic year. Education Department has expressed an interest in Ryan should he in turn confirm an interest in teaching as a career.

Scholar Leemarc Thomas

A former Head Boy at Prince Andrew School, Leemarc Thomas is currently studying with Thames Valley University towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. Leemarc is now in his second year of study, on this three-year course, and he is due to return to the Island in 2005.

Leemarc’s first year allowed him to focus on areas such as research methods in psychology, the work of psychologists, and the history and context of psychology. The first year also allows students to meet professional psychologists working in a range of fields. He is currently focusing on three areas: Cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, and social psychology, and he will go on to study a number of other topics.

In general, the course allows students to gain a full grounding in psychology and they are able to explore the process of psychological research.

The UK Scholarships Placements Coordinator said that Leemarc is showing determination to succeed in his studies and is making progress. His tutor has said that he is coping very well with the demands of the second year.

Persons who graduate with the Bachelor of Science degree are able to find work in mental health organisations, or as residential social workers, human resources managers, in education, and counselling and some people go on to take up posts in business and industry. The basis of the degree could also allow Leemarc to continue studying towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist. On St Helena, a degree in psychology could see Leemarc working in the personnel, education, or health sectors.
