Comments: Sir or Ma'am:  I did a net search for Barbara Chick, who was a nurse, who lost her life trying to rescue patients from the hospital, that I believe is in Stanley, in April 1984.  Therefore I found your site.  I was an American soldier, serving in Germany, and I was passed Barbara's address by a friend.  We became pen-pals and had an wonderful exchange during late 1983 and early 1984.  Unfortunately, we never met.  My last letter to Barbara was returned to me by her mother in the UK.  Barbara's mother announced the loss of her daughter and wrote me a compassionate and warm letter of regret that I had lost my pen-pal.  I did write back to Barbara's mother, however left Germany for another assignment in late 1984, and thus, we fell out of touch.
I am moved by what I have read in your website and mourn the passing of time in which this world has been the poorer for the loss of this fine young woman.  No doubt, although I did not know the others who perished in this tragic fire, this applies to them as well.

Today, I am a retired U. S. Army Sergeant Major, with over thirty years of military service to my country and I reside in Arizona in the U.S.A.

I want to thank you for remembering and honouring Barbara Chick her legacy, and that of the others who perished with her.

It is a fine thing you have done.
Very Respectfully,
Jeffrey D. Gallant

PUBLIC MEETING:

This will include a presentation on the economy by Chief Executive Chris Simpkins and Deputy Financial Secretary Keith Padgett.

COURT NEWS:

Jailed Nurse, Denise Schophaus, has failed in her appeal against a prison sentence she received for drugs theft and forgery in April.  Schophaus received several 36-week sentences to run concurrently for eight separate charges relating to drugs theft from KEMH and forgery in the Hospital drugs register.  Chief Justice, James Wood, carried out a review of the trial evidence in the UK and today confirmed that he had upheld the sentence issued by Senior Magistrate, Nick Sanders.  Chief Justice Wood said he would publish a fuller explanation of his reasoning in due course.

Gavin Browning received a second conditional discharge today after pleading guilty to assault.  The Court heard that after being sacked from his job at Fitzroy in May, Browning returned on the 6th of June to collect his belongings.  Farm Manager, Alan Eagle, went to find Browning to tell him to leave the farm and found him drinking in the social club.  After 10 minutes, Browning walked to one of the houses in the settlement, followed by Mr. Eagle.  Ros Cheek, prosecuting, said Browning had called him names on the way there and, when they reached the house, Mr. Eagle said he didn’t trust Browning, at which point, Browning punched and kicked him, according to the prosecution.  Richard Marlor, for the defendant, said his client denied throwing a punch, though he admitted the kick.  Browning said Mr. Eagle said he wouldn’t be welcome at the Fitzroy Memorial Service and he then became emotional and struck out with his foot.  One of the witnesses, in a written statement, said, “Every time I have seen them together, they argue and sometimes it becomes particularly personal.  He’s been through a difficult few months, losing his home and his job and I think that Mr. Eagle gets some joy from this.”

The Court heard that Browning was unemployed with no savings and so would not be able to pay a fine.  His other conditional discharge is for a traffic offence and Judy Summers told him that as JPs, the bench weren’t permitted to take it into account.  If he appeared again in Court before a magistrate during the period of his discharge, however, both offences could be taken into account.

Kevin Fise from MPA was fined £50.00 without costs this morning for driving without due care and attention, after admitting reversing his dump truck into a van.  The Court heard how the power failed in the 11Metre long dumper he was driving on the Mare Harbour Road, he decided to reverse back into a side road so the vehicle wouldn’t block the main carriageway.  Another driver in a van behind him saw him coming and, unable to reverse quickly enough, himself, sounded his horn.  The Defendant said he hadn’t heard the horn because his own reversing alarm was so loud and the van had been in his blind spot.  He pleaded guilty to the charge.  A second charge of failing to comply with a traffic sign was dropped.

The case of Glyndall Hugh Valler, charged with driving without due care and attention was adjourned for a week.

THANK-YOU, ANYA:

Charity Shop organisers have offered Anya Cofre their thanks, who is soon to leave the Islands, for all her work in making the shop a success.  Connie May, who has agreed to take over as shop manager after Anya’s departure at the end of this month.  The Rev. Paul Sweeting (PS) says she’s been the driving force behind the shop, putting thousands of pounds into local charities.  We asked him how much of a difference she’d made.

PS:  Really, I think it’s the difference between the shop existing and not existing.  It goes back long before I arrived in the Islands to when Anya worked for my predecessor, Alistair McHaffie and the other churches in the town.  I think she knew there was a place for Bargains Galore here and subsequent experience has proved her to be right.  She’s really been the leading light with doing the work, day in, day out – managing, co-ordination, getting the volunteers organised, dealing with the stock.  We’ve opened a shop in the West, I believe.  A lot of that is down to Anya herself.  She helped to move the work forward and helped us move to our new premises on Fitzroy road.  We are very thankful for all she’s done and wish her good luck.

BIELZA:

Argentine Foreign Minister, Rafael Bielza has said Falkland Islanders will be looking to Argentina for support rather than the UK.  He told LaNacion that the change would happen when Argentina was economically stronger.  When the country is definitely a serious country and can offer good health, education and well-being, the Islanders are not going to look 12,000 nautical miles away for what they have in Argentina, he said.  These words were just two days after the foreign Minister arrived back from the OAS General Assembly meeting in Quito.  He also told the newspaper that the Government will go on making claims in international forums and maintaining for as long as necessary that the Islands belong to them.

POLICE NEWS:

The Police were kept busy over the long weekend dealing with 6 road accidents and a request for an ambulance.  The accidents include one on Friday evening on the Stanley to Darwin Road in which one person was trapped inside a vehicle.  The fire service freed the person, who was then taken to Hospital by ambulance.

On Sunday, there was a request for an ambulance at the Globe Tavern after someone collapsed.  Also, on Sunday, at 0650 a vehicle crashed into the MPA check-point and was later found to have no brakes.

HARBOUR NEWS:

There are only two vessels fishing in the zone at the moment and both are reporting poor catches.
