POLICE COMMITTEE NEWS:

Jailed nurse, Denise Schophaus, is appealing against her sentence for drugs theft.    In April, Miss Schophaus received a number of 36-week sentences to run concurrently after pleading guilty to eight charges relating to the theft of Pethadine and forgery in the hospital drugs register.  At yesterday’s meeting of the Police Committee the Chairman, H.E. the Governor Mr. Howard Pearce, asked why the offences of the theft of a class “A” drug and false accounting were marked in police statistics as current, rather than detected.  Chief of Police, Dave Morris, confirmed that it was because the defendant was appealing against the sentence handed down by former Senior Magistrate, Nick Sanders, so the case was still considered active.

Police are to step up night-time speed checks in Stanley to cut down on the number of vehicles racing past peoples’ homes at night.  Attorney General, David Lang, told the Police Committee yesterday that Ross Road East was an accident waiting to happen because of the number of vehicles speeding past small children who are playing out after dark.  Ross Road West was also mentioned as a speeding hot spot.  Members discussed whether speed bumps, chicanes, or rumble strips would help prevent speeding but agreed that more frequent speed checks after dark would be more economical and would act as an effective deterrent if people knew they could get caught.

Other decisions in the Police Committee included the provisions of £795.00 worth of secure paper printed with a Falkland Islands watermark to print Driving Licences on and make them look more official.  It was also agreed that parking on Brandon Road should be restricted to the South Side between Dairy Paddock Road and Reservoir Road to make it safer as part of the Ice Route, particularly for Emergency Services vehicles.

ROAD SHOW:

Farmers on the west today will have a chance to grill Councillors and officials as the Government Road Show reaches Fox Bay.  Chief Executive, Chris Simpkins, Director of Agriculture, Phyl Rendell, Deputy Financial Secretary, Keith Padgett, and Cllrs. Norma Edwards and Jan Cheek were all on the panel.  It kicked off at 1630 in the Social Club.

TWO MEDI-VACS FOR THE RAF:

The Search and Rescue Team have been kept on their toes in the last couple of days.  Yesterday, the team airlifted a fisherman, who was suffering from a stomach complaint, off the Fera Limas, which was off Beauchene Island.  The man was brought into Stanley for treatment on the SeaKing.  Today, they are due to pick up a fisherman suffering from abdominal pains from the Tucroe, which is currently 160 miles North of the Falklands.

LIBERATION DAY NEWS:

Two ships will be in port over the weekend ready for the Liberation Day Celebrations.  HMS Cardiff, which recently arrived in the Islands and HMS Leeds Castle.  She will be travelling around from Mare Harbour.  She will be in the Islands until September when she will be replaced by the HMS Dumbarton Castle, which has just come out of refit.

MARCH AND SHOOT:

The organiser of last week-end’s March and Shoot has praised everyone who took part, particularly the FIDF teams.  Maj. Marcus Luckland – Malone, Officer Commanding the RIC, thanked the teams for their enthusiasm in the arduous contest.  He said that tyhey and their unit should be rightly proud of their achievements.  And, my soldiers and I have a healthy respect for what they accomplished.  He continued that he saw many fine examples of leadership, team cohesion, high morale, drive and determination.  The twenty-four teams taking part included 2 from the FIDF, one of which took 3rd place, 1st and 2nd going to the Royal Highland Fusiliers.  The competition took teams of four over 10 miles of bog and hill, including an ascent to the top of Mr. Wickham and freezing water crossings.

HARBOUR, SHIPPING AND FISHING NEWS:

Things are quiet in the Harbour news.  There are only 4 vessels fishing in the zone at the moment.  The only vessel that is fishing for Hoki is reporting good catches but vessels fishing for Ray and Skate are reporting sporadic catches.  There are two vessels alongside FIPASS.  They are the CFL Valliant and Fera Limas.
