FROM CABLE & WIRELESS

Cable & Wireless have long been supporters of Falkland athletes attending overseas games.  They donate £2,000.00 to either the Commonwealth or Island Games athletes each year the Falklands compete.  This year they have donated the money to the Commonwealth Youth Games which will be held in Bendigo, Australia between the 29th November and the 4th December 2004.  “It’s an excellent opportunity for our young athletes to broaden their horizons and to compete at a higher level”, said Emma Edwards, Customer Services Manager at Cable & Wireless.  “We have long supported adult events, shooting, golf, horse racing and now we are pleased to help the younger members of the Falklands community to compete in these games.  We have a very good team, who I’m sure will represent the Falklands splendidly.  Cable & Wireless wish them all the best of luck”.

24 Commonwealth nations will be competing with up to 1,000 athletes and officials being accommodated in La Trobe University. A total of 10 different events will be battled out by the young athletes, including Swimming and Athletics, the two areas where the Falklands will be competing. Bendigo has a population of 92,000 people and is just north of the City of Melbourne.  It was built after gold was found in 1851.  Originally called Sandhurst, the name was changed to Bendigo after a shepherd who grazed his flocks in the river valley.  If the Australians give the same sort of welcome as they did in the 2000 Olympics, this is an event our young citizens will remember for the rest of their lives.

FIBS NEWS DIRECT: WEDNESDAY, 26 MAY 2004

PARLIAMENT QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CONFLICT’S 25TH:

Questions have been asked in Parliament about commemorations for the 25th anniversary of the Falklands War.  Lindsay Hoyle, MP, asked the MOD what plans had been put in place in the UK for the anniversary. In a written answer, Minister for Veterans, Iver Kaplan, MP, said preliminary discussions have taken place with SAMA’82 on ideas for the commemoration and would continue.  He said they would also consider proposals to fund a veterans’ visit in 2007 like that held in 2002.  But, in answer to another question from Mr. Hoyle, Mr. Kaplan said Falklands veterans wouldn’t be eligible for grants under the “Heroes Return Scheme,” which was set up to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.  Only veterans of that war can take part in that particular programme.

COURT NEWS:

Two cases appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this morning.  The first was an application from Graham Minto for the return of his driving licence.  Mr. Minto lost his licence for 18 months last June after pleading guilty to being drunk in charge of a vehicle with a lower reading of 87.  This morning the court heard Probation Officer, Sarah Jane Rich, who said Mr. Minto had complied with all of his probation conditions apart from one minor incident in June last year, where he was given a verbal warning.  A letter from his employer, AWG, was also presented, which pointed out that Mr. Minto would benefit professionally if his licence was returned.  And, Miss Rich added it would mean more regular contact with his children, as he would be able to take them out.  After taking all of these factors into account, Senior Magistrate, Nick Sanders, turned the application down but said that Mr. Minto was free to apply again in three months’ time.

Nigel Bishop had the case against him for speeding withdrawn for the time-being.  Senior Magistrate, Nick Sanders, said this was the best course of action as he was about to leave the Islands and didn’t know when his replacement would start.  The Summary Court wouldn’t be able to deal with the case in the meantime, as it had already progressed to the Magistrate’s Court.  There are still some investigations to be carried out by both parties, including testing of the speeding gun and the possibility of radar interference.  When both parties are ready to proceed, Mr. Bishop will be re-summonsed before the Summary Court.  He was stopped on the MPA Road on the 24th of April after he was clocked doing 67 MPH.

CHALLENGE DAY:

Today is Challenge Day and young people have been leading the way in the bid to get breathless with activity.  Infant/Junior School Students danced and then moved on for a spot of YMCA and other hits.  Meanwhile, teams of Community School pupils are putting their backs into a car push on the playing field.  Each class has 45 minutes to work together and push the vehicle as far as they can around a marked-out circuit.  A football match kicked off in the sports hall at 1200 and there is also a table tennis tournament going on in the street.
