WOOL REPORT: for the week ending Friday 21st May 2004

Auctions

The Australian market’s Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) gained ten cents on Tuesday, jumped 17 cents on Wednesday and drifted four cents on Thursday.  The EMI thus closed the week up 23 cents at 798 A cents.  Pass-ins averaged nine percent.  Chinese buying (much apparently for shipment by the end of May) and currency levels   influenced buying. “Business continues to be hand to mouth.  Sales were made and appear to have been covered immediately while exchange rates were favourable.” WRWMR

In New Zealand the Fine Indicator was quoted down 51 cents on a fortnight ago at 1,116 NZ cents and Medium Indicator quoted up 27 cents over the same period at 586 NZ cents.  The Strong Indicator gained 20 cents to 453 NZ cents whilst the Lamb Indicator added 13 cents to 436 NZ cents. Sixteen percent was passed in.

In South Africa the Cape Wools Overall Merino Indicator lost 2.3 percent slipping from 2,879 to 2,814 SA cents/kg, much as a result of its stronger currency.

Currencies

The closing rate for the Australian dollar in London for the week was A$2.55/£.

The New Zealand dollar closed the week trading at 2.92 NZ cents/£.

FWG Agency

The Atlantic Crusader voyage 2 wool test results were received this week.

Significant quantities of bales from the FIC’s voyage 3 Marianne Danica are anticipated to arrive in Bradford this week.

A good spread of interest and enquiry saw sales from 21.0 to 30.0 microns fleece wool, with business also turned away.  Additional supplies of Falkland wool would be welcomed by our speciality customers.

With Regards

Robert
