South Atlantic Adventure for Flat Stanley

SOUTH ATLANTIC ADVENTURE FOR FLAT STANLEY

By J. Brock (SARTMA)

When Flat Stanley left St. Clement’s Elementary School in St. Bernard, Ohio on the 5th of November 2003, no one knew that by the time he finished his travels, the paper cut out would be travelling to each of the South Atlantic British Overseas Territories.  That’s a trip of approximately 20,000 miles by air and by sea.

After going through the postal system in the UK, Flat Stanley landed on Ascension Island prior to heading south to the Falkland Islands.  From the Falklands, Flat Stanley travelled by sea on M/S ENDEAVOUR to the South Atlantic Island of South Georgia.  Then it was off to Tristan da Cunha for three weeks.  The M/S PROFESSOR MOLCHANOFSKY then took Stanley to the Island of St. Helena and then on to Ascension Island, where he was mailed back to St. Clement’s School.

On the Falkland Islands, Flat Stanley was photographed with H. E. the Governor Mr. Howard Pearce and stamped and signed on the back by him as well.  Mr. Pearce also signed as Commissioner of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.  On South Georgia there were visits with Tim and Pauline Carr Pat and Sarah Lurcock.   And, there was a tour around the old Grytviken whaling station, where asbestos was being removed and then on to Godthal Bay, prior to departure to Tristan da Cunha.

During Flat Stanley’s visit to Tristan da Cunha he was photographed with the students of St. Mary’s School as well as the Chief Islander, Mrs. Anne Green.  He visited the Potato Patches and chatted with crew from HMS ENDURANCE, on her way to Cape Town.  Then, off to St. Helena, where he was photographed with H. E. the Governor Mr. David Hollamby.  There was a chat with Cllr. Stedson Francis and Easter lunch with Phyllis Coleman as well as a tour of Longwood House, where Napoleon died.

Flat Stanley as well as brochures and letters were mailed back to Ohio when he arrived on Ascension Island.  For one young 4th Grader, Hannah U, there was quite a surprise.  When notes were compared, her Flat Stanley had travelled the furthest.

Dear Friends at St Mary’s,

Thanks for replying to my Flat Stanley letter and for the neat pictures!  I really enjoyed hearing from you.  Please say hello to everyone in your school from our 4th grade class in St. Bernard (near Cincinnati), Ohio, USA.  We think your island looks really neat!

     Thank you very, very much!
