The Falkland Islands are preparing for their first ever entry in the II Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Bendigo, Australia in November 2004.  The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has allocated 6 places in this prestigious event for 4 Swimmers and 2 Athletics entrants.  The swimming team comprises of 4 of the rising stars from the Stanley Swimming Club, Dion Robertson, Edward Freer, Hannah Arthur-Almond and Thomas Judd.  The team will be coached during the games by Senior Squad Coach, Pam Freer.  Roxane Morrison of the Stanley Running Club will represent us on the track and shows great promise in the 100 M and 400 M events.  The Falkland Islands Overseas Games Association (FIOGA) have been able to very generously offer the team some financial support, however sponsorship is being sought from other companies.  If you or your business would like to become involved in sponsoring this team, then please contact Steve Dent, Team manager for more details.  The Falkland Islands Company have once again generously offered to sponsor the official team tracksuits and the Team would like to thank them for their continued support.

The idea of a Millennium Commonwealth Youth Games was first discussed in 1997 and was brought to fruition in 1998. The inaugural Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Edinburgh, Scotland from 10 -14 August 2000. 14 countries contested 483 medals over 3 days of competition in 8 sports. A total of 733 athletes & team officials, 280 Technical Officials and around 500 volunteers were involved in the event.

The sports contested were athletics, fencing, gymnastics, hockey, lawn tennis, squash, swimming and weightlifting.

The success of these Games in 2000 gained the support of the Commonwealth Games Federation who has pledged continued support for a Commonwealth Youth Games to be held every 4 years.

FIBS NEWS DIRECT: 06 MAY 2004:

INSURANCE REP IN THE ISLANDS:

The Managing Director of Caribbean Alliance Insurance Company is in the Islands this week.  Caribbean Alliance took over the insurance business just a few months ago and Ernie Lettbie (EL) is visiting from his home in Antigua to meet with agents, FIC and get a feel for the Islands.  I asked him today about the Company’s approach to tourism insurance.

EL:  Our insurance company is nervous about the Tourism product, mainly because of the American impact and the American litigation problems.  We issue policies here.  I don’t think the other insurers had previously done that.  We are quite happy to take on the liabilities.  We do restrict it in as much as we do not cover the world-wide jurisdiction because it cannot just allow the American courts to have jurisdiction for what goes on down here.  We are very happy to do anything that requires a court action in the Falkland Islands and, indeed, the United Kingdom.  It’s us and the client who do not want to be exposed to what goes on in America.  So, we have managed to put together various policies for people who require liability coverage to comply with the tourist trade, cruise ships and that sort of thing.

LEEDS CASTLE:

HMS Leeds Castle welcomed a group of civilian visitors onboard yesterday for its voyage around from Stanley to Mare Harbour.  Sue Gyford was one of those who were offered the chance to see life onboard the patrol vessel.  As well as a tour of the ship, there was a Tornado fly past and a man overboard exercise.

TROUGH:

FIBS told you last week that the Trough was winding up for its 10th birthday this weekend.  And, the Pigs are celebrating with a run of 3 Saturdays open on the trot.  After last week, they will be gigging again this Saturday and the week after to make sure everyone gets a chance to celebrate.  After that, they will be taking a break for four to six weeks, while the Trough is extended to the East.  The first ever public function there was held on Friday, May the 6th 1994, when Claudette Anderson celebrated her birthday.
