Argentine MFA Announce Breakthrough in Flights Talks

ARGENTINE FOREIGN MINISTRY ANNOUNCE BREAKTHROUGH IN AIR CHARTER OVER-FLIGHTS TALKS

As a result of a meeting held yesterday in Buenos Aires, the Argentine Foreign Ministry have announced that that there has been a breakthrough in the air charter over-flights issue that has dogged both the South/west Atlantic since last November.

The announcement, written in Spanish, says that both sides have reached a political understanding that now needs to address the technical issues.  Continuing on from that, the announcement states that both sides have managed to unlock the current situation and advance to setting the foundations for further discussion on the Falklands flights question.  According to the announcement, both the British Embassy in Buenos Aires and the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be working on the remaining points during the next few days.

Those attending yesterday’s meeting were Sr. Bielsa, the Argentine Foreign Minister, Bill Rammell, Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Sir Robin Christopher, the British Ambassador in Buenos Aires, Jorge Tiana, Argentine Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister and Juan Jose Uranga, Argentine Foreign Policy Under-secretary.

The British position has been that first the charter flights be restored before any further talks about direct air links between the Falklands and Argentina can begin.
