WOOL REPORT: for the week ending Friday 6th February 2004

Auctions

The Australian market’s Eastern Market Indicator was little changed overall this week but with wool finer than 21 microns tending softer.  The EMI added a cent on Tuesday, gained three cents on Wednesday and lost the three cents on Thursday.  The EMI thus closed the week a cent better at 790 A cents.  “In relatively short supply broader wool fared better than finer types although stylish selections were generally firm.  China and European topmakers were active.” WRWMR.

In New Zealand the Fine Indicator was not quoted.  The Medium Indicator added eight cents to 544 NZ cents. The Strong Indicator was six better at 374 NZ cents, whilst the Lamb Indicator also gained six cents to close at 374 NZ cents. Nine percent was passed-in.

The Cape Wools Overall Merino Indicator moved 2.0 percent lower from 3,332 SA cents to 3,264 SA cents not least because of the stronger currency.

The British sale saw ‘strong demand on most types resulting in a clearance of 81% on a 2.15 million kilo offering’.  The UK indicator was unchanged at 78 p/kg.

Currencies

Influenced by UK interest rates, the Australian dollar traded weaker towards the end of the week at 2.40 A cents/£ whilst the New Zealand dollar was trading at 2.68 NZ cents/£.

UK Interest Rates

The Bank of England raised UK base interest rates for the second time in three months to four percent (4.0%).  In contrast the European Central Bank this week kept its primary rate unchanged at two percent and last week the US Federal Reserve held its primary rate at one percent.  Futures market rates indicated UK rates were expected to end the year at 4.5 to 4.75 percent and rise to 5 percent by the end of 2005. FT.

Press Release Darwin Shipping Ltd

Darwin Shipping Ltd were very disappointed that despite assurances from the owners the Anne Boye failed the tests required to be able to use the Derricks on Saturday 7th February despite extensive repairs done in Stanley.

As a company Darwin Shipping Ltd could not allow a problem such as this to destroy the excellent support our customers on the West have shown us over many difficult years.

We have with the kind assistance of Island Shipping Ltd at very short notice got the Tamar going to Fox Bay to do two runs to pick up the wool Anne Boye was due to collect. Island Shipping Ltd will be advising when these runs are but we believe they commence on Monday. We would like to thank Island Shipping for the prompt offer of assistance and their rapid response.

The commitments on costs we made to our customers on the West will stand and we have asked Island Shipping Ltd that the costs for this trip be billed to Darwin Shipping Ltd. We can then pick up the difference in costs.

We are in the process of Chartering a different vessel for the next voyage from different owners and we are confident that it will provide our customers with the level of service we have traditionally supplied.

BREWERY BOYS STORM STANLEY PUBS

By J. Brock (FINN)

A Gaelic six-piece band, The Brewery Boys, have been a huge hit in Stanley’s pubs as well as Military establishments during this past week.  They began playing their own unique brand of Irish Music the day they arrived on the 4th of February.  During their extremely busy time in the Falklands the band played at the Globe Tavern, Victory Bar, FIDF Hall and Hillside Mess.

Their music was broadcast live over FIBS for a half an hour on Friday evening.  Another treat was a lunchtime session at the Globe Beer Garden, where friends and family had the opportunity to lounge on the grass with BBQ in hand and music wafting through the air.  Falklands favourites, Jock and Liz Elliot sang with the band for a good 40 minutes.

The band’s last venue will be on February 9th at the Victory Bar.  Money raised during the venues is going to the Stephen Jaffray Memorial fund and The Royal Irish Regiment Benevolent Fund.

SUCCESSFUL REGATTA HELD IN STANLEY HARBOUR

By J. Brock (FINN)

In picture perfect weather, the first annual Stanley Regatta was held in Stanley Harbour on Saturday, 07 February 2004.  Yes.  The day was so successful that a regatta will be an annual event from now on, presumably in February.  People began to filter down to “B” Slip at around 0930 and a briefing session took place at 1000.  People then began to assemble sails on their dinghies and dawn wet suits for the events.

The Seamen’s Mission set up a tasty BBQ to keep hungry spectators and sailors alike fed and quickly the area around “B” Slip had a carnival atmosphere.  Whole families took part in the races and this made it a fun day out for everyone.  Thanks must go to all competitors, those who turned up and supported on the day and the FIDF for providing the safety cover as well as the tents.  Thanks also goes to Cllr. John Birmingham, who agreed to hand out the prizes at the narrows Bar on Saturday night and the sponsors who donated the prizes.  Special mention also goes to Steve Dent, the Leisure Centre Manager, for organising the event.
