Successful Regatta Held in Stanley Harbour

SUCCESSFUL REGATTA HELD IN STANLEY HARBOUR

By J. Brock (FINN)

In picture perfect weather, the first annual Stanley Regatta was held in Stanley Harbour on Saturday, 07 February 2004.  Yes.  The day was so successful that a regatta will be an annual event from now on, presumably in February.  People began to filter down to “B” Slip at around 0930 and a briefing session took place at 1000.  People then began to assemble sails on their dinghies and dawn wet suits for the events.

The Seamen’s Mission set up a tasty BBQ to keep hungry spectators and sailors alike fed and quickly the area around “B” Slip had a carnival atmosphere.  Whole families took part in the races and this made it a fun day out for everyone.  Thanks must go to all competitors, those who turned up and supported on the day and the FIDF for providing the safety cover as well as the tents.  Thanks also goes to Cllr. John Birmingham, who agreed to hand out the prizes at the narrows Bar on Saturday night and the sponsors who donated the prizes.  Special mention also goes to Steve Dent, the Leisure Centre Manager, for organising the event.

Photos with people show: Ken Newton and Dema Sychov with their dinghy that they raced on behalf of the Stanley Sea Cadets.

Andy Dring receives his prize from John Birmingham for winning the Island Shipping Prize.
