Why?
Well, during a sponsored walk back in 1996 from Port San Carlos to Government House in Stanley, Carl, from Bombilla, along with many other good Samaritans through the walk were kind enough to give us lodgings for the night. The walkers struck up a rapport and enjoyed the evening immensely.
I have been unable to ascertain whether he was still the owner of the house when the fire occurred.
Do you have any more news items concerning the issue? Is the house to be rebuilt?
Yours

FIBS NEWS DIRECT FOR FRIDAY, 30 JANUARY 2004
GCSE RESULTS:
Yesterday students around the
SC: It’s exciting for me to be able to come on to FIBS with such a good news story. In June 2002, all the education staff subscribed to an education improvement plan. There were two aims for that plan to insure that children achieve or exceed their predicted level of performance and to ensure that teaching staff intervene on 100% of under-achieving pupils. The GCSE results were received today. Staff at FICS were delighted with the grades which the students achieved. The majority either reached or exceeded their expectations. We hope that students will take advantage of this very satisfactory starting point and build on it in the future. This seems an ideal opportunity to congratulate all students and staff on their hard work during the academic year. In the past two years, the senior management team at FICS has worked hard to improve monitoring and assessment systems. Two years ago, the Director of Education said that the Education Department would strive for excellence. The very high number of GCSE points that came today suggest that good progress is being made.
COMMANDO CHALLENGE:
The Falkland Islands Defence Force hosted “Commando Challenge” competition kicked off yesterday and, by the end of the day, the hosts were narrowly in the lead. The competition, which achieved teams from the forces as well as representatives from the local volunteer force, began with a two-mile log race. The RIC “B” Team put up a strong show and won convincingly, reported Major Peter Biggs of the Falkland Islands Defence Force late last night. The FIDF team took 4th place out of the eight. The main competition then began with a challenge of an 18 mile race in the best possible time. This included two check points. After a river crossing command task, the FIDF ended the day in first place, very closely followed by the RIC “B” Team. The RIC “A” Team was in 3rd place and HQBFFI in 4th. Major Biggs commented that places could easily change around today. The competition continued from the Malo at 0800 this morning.
FI CONSERVATION 25 YEARS:
Falklands Conservation will celebrate their 25th anniversary at Government House tomorrow evening. This event marks the beginning of the anniversary year and will include a speech from the Chief Executive of the World Wildlife Fund, Robert Napier. Other events throughout the year will include a Campers’ Bash on West Falkland in March, a golf tournament in April and a Campers’ Bash at Fitzroy, a Charity Ball in September and a big open air party towards the end of the year.
RURAL BUSINESS ASSOCIATION SHEEP SHOW:
The Rural Business Association Sheep Show may not be until April but that gives plenty of time for farmers to start preparing their prime stock. I spoke to RBA Secretary, Leann Harris (LeH) earlier in the week to find out a bit more about when and where this year’s event will be taking place.
LeH: It is on the 3rd of April and the reason I am doing something now is I want to get it in to the mind of farmers so they can pick out the best ones and mark them to get them in later.
LH: What time is it all happening?
LeH: It’s out at Fitzroy Farm Shearing Shed as usual. Thanks to FLH and Alan Eagle for that. We are starting later. Fitzroy are now on Stanley Time. Entries are to be penned up by 1200. Judging will commence about 1300. The prize-giving will be done by the First Secretary, Harriet Hall at about 1500.
