FIBS NEWS DIRECT FOR TUESDAY, 27 JANUARY 2004

CPA DELEGATES:

Delegates from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association will be arriving in the Islands on the 14th of February.  They will be staying in the Islands until the 21st.  Cllr Richard Cockwell (RC) tells us more:

RC:  The Commonwealth Parliamentary association, of which we are a member, is having a regional conference here.  To tell you more about the CPA, it’s an association of parliamentarians right across the globe.  All countries which were members of the Commonwealth, including one or two who weren’t, such as Cameroon.  Other people can apply, who weren’t part of the old British Commonwealth.  They get together at conferences and do parliamentary visits and regional conferences where they actually discuss matters of mutual interest.  Outside of the United Nations, it is the largest organisation of countries that actually get together.

In February, we are holding a regional conference.  The region we belong to is the British Isles and Mediterranean.  There are no other Commonwealth countries down in this part of the world.  St. Helena is also part of this region.  It’s very exciting and a great honour to do it.  It’s our turn to do it and it’s the first time since 1993 that a conference has been held like this in the South Atlantic.

FIRE INVESTIGATION:

Forensic Scientist, Mark Phillips has been in the Islands this week helping the Royal Falkland Islands Police and the Fire Service in their investigation into the fire at Bombilla.  Mr. Philips of the Fire Investigation Branch, flew in on Saturday and is due to leave on today’s British Midland Flight.

EXPERIMENTAL CONTAINER RUN:

Island Shipping is to carry out an experimental container run to Chile this weekend.  Ian Wilkinson says chartering the St. Brandon, which will take wool and general cargo to Punta Arenas and will be bringing back the usual general cargo plus frozen and chilled food and some vehicles.  They hope that this will prove the advantages of container shipping to and from the Islands and maybe in the future can look forward can look to a more regular service.

HMS ENDURANCE:

HMS Endurance has left Stanley but minus some members of her crew.  The Hydrographic Team are carrying out a survey of the Harbour and Berkley Sound to update existing charts.  The Team will be around for the next six weeks.
