FIBS NEWS DIRECT: MONDAY, 16 DECEMBER 2003

BUSINESSMAN PROPOSES URUGUAYAN AIR LINK:

Controversy boils on over flights to Chile and Argentina but one man thinks he might have the solution.  Charles Roberts, an Anglo/Argentine Businessman, was in the Islands last week discussing the possibility of a twice weekly air link between the Falklands and Montevideo in Uruguay.  An interview will be transcribed later.

DIRECTOR OF AGRICULTURE STEPS DOWN:

Director of Agriculture, Peter Johnstone, resigned from the Falkland Islands Development Board this morning.  Chair of the Committee, Cllr. Mike Summers, commended the Director on his sensible attitudes during his time on the board and wished him well for the future.  He resigned because he is due to leave the Islands shortly, as Phyl Rendell takes over the new Joint Agriculture and Mineral Resources Department.  One item that was due to feature in the meeting was the upgrading of the exhibition stand but this was withdrawn for the time being as some new information had come in.  The General Manager’s report included subjects such as Maersk, who are still on schedule to visit the Islands on the 25th of January.  He reported that so far around 15 to 20 40ft Containers were likely to go on the boat and that he was also pushing the Company to instruct a local company to act on their behalf.   But it was noted that this was not normal practice for Maersk.

SANTA NEEDS A LITTLE HELP FROM HIS FRIENDS

Santa will be calling into Victory Green as usual on Christmas Eve.  But this year, he needs a bit of help.  The trusty old lorry that brings him into Stanley is getting a bit old and Fr. Christmas needs a new set of wheels to bring his presents into town.  Julie Clarke (JC) explains:

JC:  Normally, Bonners Haulage are very good and they donate their lorry and we use that every year to help bring Santa from FIGASS because we’ve got no snow, obviously.

JC:  It is too old and it’s not capable of doing it any more so we are looking for help from whoever.  As long as it’s not a high vehicle, for the safety of the children.  We need something that’s safe and fairly low and will get us from FIGAS to Victory Green.  If you can help in any way, give us a call on 22703 or 21705, if they can help in any way, a vehicle, donations towards the Santa sleigh, then they will be gratefully received.

CHARITY SHOP;

The Charity Shop has made fresh donations to five different charities in the Islands totalling £3,000.00.  £600.00 each has been given to the Lighthouse Seamen’s Mission, The Cancer Support and Awareness Trust, the Stephen Jaffray Memorial Fund, the Falkland Islands Branch of the British Red Cross and the Hospital General Fund.  The total donated during 2003 is now an impressive £9,600.00.  And, £9,460.00 has been raised to pay for the renovation and extension of the new shop on Fitzroy Road.  Trustees say they would like to thank everyone who has volunteered to serve customers, donated clothing or bought goods.

PILOT GOES HOME:

An Australian Pilot who was stranded in Antarctica after running low on fuel is now on his way home.  John Johansen, who became the first pilot to fly a home-made plane over the South Pole solo, encountered problems when he faced head-winds, which forced him to land at the joint US/New Zealand McMurdo-Scott Base.  Johanses asked both countries officials to sell him the 400 litres of fuel he needed to return to New Zealand but despite appeals from the Australian Government, they refused under a policy of discouraging tourists to the base.  But luckily for him, British Pilot, Polly Vacher, was forced to abandon her attempt to fly around the world over both poles and she offered her spare fuel which was stored at the base.
