CUDDLY TOYS SOLD IN AID OF CANCER SUPPORT AND AWARENESS TRUST

By J. Brock (FINN)

A sale of cuddly toys took place at the West Store on Saturday, 11 October 2003 in aid of the Cancer Support and Awareness Trust. October is breast cancer awareness month and to help with that awareness, there were pamphlets available for those who wanted to learn the symptoms and methods of breast examination. Also being sold for donations were ribbons and home made biscuits adorned with icing in the shape of a looped pink ribbon.

The event was organised by Bargains Galore Charity Shop and its Manager, Anya Cofre, helped to sell the items along with Jean Lewis and Shiralee Collins.

The sale began at 1000 and people quickly frequented the stand and bought goods like teddy bears, dinosaurs, donkeys, troll dolls and bunny rabbits. Four hundred and ten pounds was raised during the day which ended at 1400.

There will be another sale next month.

Lewis Clifton’s Proposed Camp Visits

Former Councillor Lewis Clifton, who is a candidate for the Camp bye election, will be flying to West Falkland this weekend (having been there Friday last), initially to Port Edgar, thence to the Port Stephens road camp site to meet with prospective constituents who live in the surrounding area of that location, before proceeding to Fox Bay social club, where I have arranged to meet other constituents over a beer in the social club at 19:00 hrs camp time. I intend to visit some other West Falkland locations during Sunday before returning to Stanley.

On Saturday 18/Oct in the early evening he will be available at Hope Cottage to meet North Camp voters over a beer or cup of tea - courtesy of Terrance & Carol Phillips

It is his intention on Saturday 25/Oct to get down into Lafonia to meet with prospective voters in Goose

Green and or North Arm, but this is still to be confirmed.

FIBS NEWS DIRECT: WEDNESDAY, 15 OCTOBER 2003

LOLIGO SEASON CLOSES:

The Loligo fishery is closing at midnight tonight, two weeks early. This is due to the abundance of maturing squid and it was decided that the fishery should be closed as a conservation measure. This has lead to increased activity in the Harbour as vessels come in for their EU inspections. Some of these vessels will now change over to finfish, while others will either head off to the high seas or home. There are now only 33 vessels fishing in the zone where finfish catches remain steady. The tanker, Zalgares is in Berkley Sound and the JCR and the Igualdo are alongside FIPASS.

CABLE & WIRELESS:

If you’ve been mulling over a question about Cable & Wireless, you will soon have the opportunity to put it to them in public. Cable & Wireless have kindly agreed to answer your questions on an FIBS Phone – in to be held at 1830, next Wednesday, October 22nd.

CAMP CANDIDATES:

Campers, What would persuade you to vote for a particular candidate in the November Camp bye-election? Do you want your candidate to be pro-abattoir, anti Argentine and have a burning desire to re-write the Constitution? FIBS will soon be calling you to find out.

DARTS GALORE:

This weekend sees darters galore heading for the FIDF Hall for the most prestigious event in the darting calendar – the prize-giving. Doors will open at the hall on Saturday night at 1930 with the prize-giving starting at 2030 sharp. H. E. the Governor Howard Pearce will be presenting the prizes, which consist mostly of glassware this year. Tickets are on sale from Sibbie at the Entertainment Centre for £5.00. And, don’t forget that drinks will be .50p on the night. If you turn up in jeans And trainers, you won’t get in.

SWIMMING POOL RE-OPENS:

Swimmers may have been high and dry in recent months but they can splash away again from today, with the long-awaited re-opening of the swimming pool at midday. The pool has been fitted with water jets right the way along its sides so there should be more warm water circulating in future. But it’s not reached the ideal 28C yet.

NEW LIFEGUARDS:

There are new lifeguards at the swimming pool who have just finished training. Stacey Bragger will start next week and another person has begun training.

LEISURE CENTRE ACTIVITIES OVER THE HOLIDAYS:

Beginning on Thursday, there will be swimming, court games, recreation of all sorts as well as going to MPA to the cinema. There are a few places left. Call Steve Dent for details.
